Our Counselling and Therapy rooms are arranged round a peaceful and secluded garden where you might find Sigmund Freud (the cat) wandering. Each room has its own separate entrance, including the Waiting room, also entered through the garden of 88 Pulborough Road.
Counselling, Hypnotherapy, and all Physical therapies at Equilibrium are strictly confidential. Our Counsellors/Psychotherapists have completed up to four years training in Counselling. Often they have background qualifications in Psychology. In addition they receive counselling supervision and personal therapy, complying with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy [BACP] Code of Ethics.
We have Male and Female counsellors, and Counsellors from a variety of cultures and creeds (Go to Therapist profiles)
All the Counsellors at this centre are qualified and experienced in helping a number of problems including relationship, depression, anxiety, phobias, obsessions, addictions, trauma and many more.
We have a number of differing skills and theoretical approaches including Psychodynmic, Integrative, Humanistic and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). However, our common belief is in your potential to understand and gain insight into your difficulties through exploration.
If you are unsure whether Counselling is for you or not, book a confidential assessment with a counsellor who will advise you of your best way forward.
We also counsel couples.
Vanessa Thomson: Proprietor of Equilibrium Counselling and Therapy Centre, Southfields, Wandsworth
BACP Senior Accredited Group and Individual Supervisor
I opened the Centre in 1985, and have worked here as a counsellor ever since.
I am now a Senior Accredited Supervisor of Individuals and Groups. I also have 20 years experience of training counselling students at Guildford College of Further and Higher Education where I co tutor the Foundation Degree in counselling in the Clarkson Integrative model.
I don’t believe counselling is for everyone; but I believe it works for many in the alleviation of psychological pain and distress. I have seen many clients who had little self-belief, grow in confidence and make what may seem small, but important changes in their lives.
Nearly everyone is capable of making this progress; though it often depends on commitment and a willingness to face those challenges that we defend against tenaciously. All trained counsellors have had their own therapy; and so have grown in self awareness. I don’t think there are many who would say that they are not still growing. This is a hugely important part of what makes a good counsellor – that they too are still learning about themselves.
If you are thinking about therapy, you are probably not as happy as you would like to be. You may even be suffering on a daily basis, and/or causing others to suffer. Please consider when you start a programme of therapy, that it will need patience and an ability to be challenged. Although therapists are empathic and non-judgemental people, they can often seem to be the embodiment of significant people in your life who have not seemed to care about you. Learning to trust your therapist and repair some of the damage from the past may enable you to live a more fruitful and psychologically healthy present.
Although this is a Centre, the rooms are not let out to Therapists unknown to me. Everyone who works here as a qualified Therapist has been known to me personally or professionally, or worked here on training placement before qualifying. This is because I want you to experience Equilibrium as a place where the best professionals work; but where you are treated with respect, humanity, and friendliness.
LOW COST Counselling is available for people of limited means. The Centre uses its close contact with Training Courses to provide these clients with Counsellors-in-training. Counsellors have at least two years training, some much more. They are members of the counsellors professional body, follow BACP code of ethics, and are carefully interviewed before being allowed to work in the Centre. Clients may self-refer.
How We Work
Through open dialogue with the client each Counsellor/Psychotherapist's method of interacting reflects his or her training. However, all counsellors are skilled at listening in a non-judgemental way, and in helping you to explore those areas of your life that may be causing you pain. Counselling enables you through exploration to make sense of how and who you are, and may sometimes lead to personal change.
If your problem is a marital or relationship one, it helps if both of you tackle things together. When both parties agree to it, Counselling for couples is ideal because it gives impartial and safe atmosphere where feelings can be openly expressed and heard. We welcome both gay and heterosexual couples.
Equilibrium does not discriminate against individuals on the basis of age, marital status, physical disability, gender, sexual orientation, race, social origins, political or religious beliefs.
Our sessions last for 50 minutes; usually you will have at least one session per week.
You will meet your counsellor at our comfortable Counselling room at 88 Pulborough Road, Southfields, Wandsworth.
There is no time limit on the duration of the therapy, it may last for a matter of weeks or for a year or more and this will be negotiated between the client and the therapist.
Our Osteopathic practice was established in 1985, and includes Acupuncture if appropriate. At this Southfields, Wandsworth practice we have added Physiotherapy to enhance our physical service to cients/patients. If unsure of your needs please call for more information.
All Physical Therapists are Registered.
