My aim in counselling and psychotherapy is to help you uncover your inner self. Most approaches to therapy, centre on bringing unconscious aspects of your problem to awareness. I believe you have the answers within, but need guidance and support to reveal them. Together we may explore your childhood experiences, looking at your life in the present and enabling you to make valuable links between the two.

I offer CBT therapy for 6 -12 sessions depending on your issues at the time.

The Therapy I offer will be supportive, explorative, and sometimes challenging and difficult. It may take time. It is a collaborative way of working, so we will be attempting to tackle your issues together in an honest and transparent way.

You may have issues with any of the following, or simply want to change the way you feel.

• Anxiety
• Terminal illness
• Vulnerability
• Relationship Conflict: in marriage, with friends, at work
• Panic Attacks, Stress, Phobias
• Addiction and Obsessive Compulsion

The Therapists #05

Leslie Stanberry

I am a Qualified Accredited BACP Counsellor. I have a Bsc (Hons) Degree from Roehampton University, trained in an “Integrative Model” (an integration of Psychodynamic, Person-Centred and Existential Counselling) But what does this mean?
Psychodynamic: enables you to be aware of present issues affected by childhood
Person-Centred: helps you to be able to address your autonomy (towards the governing of self)
Existential: aids your identification of a given fear (freedom, isolation, meaninglessness and death)

I believe that Counselling helps people to address themselves in the present, whatever the manifest “problem”. I also believe that the approaches I use are enabling in a modern-day society where we often misguidedly value time and achievement above many other human values.

My on-going interest in Tai Chi, Chi-Kung and Meditation help to inform my practice as a Counsellor by enhancing intuition and empathy (sometimes called Resonance). I think they make me a more rounded human being.
I am also a Reikki Practitioner.

I have provided short and long-term Counselling at Equilibrium since March 2006 for clients, from a many walks of life, and from a diversity of cultures and creeds.
Equilibrium provides a friendly and professional environment both for my clients and for me.

Tony Cabourn-Smith

I am a qualified BACP Counsellor with a degree in person-centred counselling. I also have a diploma in relationship counselling and nine years experience in couples counselling. I have worked at Equilibrium since 2002, seeing both short-term and long-term clients, including issues around relationships, self-worth, anxiety and addiction. My approach is Humanistic, but I have a good understanding of cognitive therapy.
I believe that everyone has within them the ability to find answers for the issues with which they struggle. I am often in awe of the courage my clients show in tackling this.
My aim is to provide an environment that supports my clients in maintaining that courage and determination to explore feelings that can be difficult or painful. Sometimes the environment can be enquiring, sometimes reflective, but it always needs to be safe, reliable, accepting and empathic.

Jill White

I have a Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Psychosynthesis Counselling and a Diploma in Couples Counselling from the training centre Re•vision, a member organisation of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am a member of the BACP and adhere to its Ethical Framework for Good Practice.

My background is in the field of parent education and support. I have over ten years’ experience working with the NHS and in private settings, facilitating groups and working experientially with individuals and couples. I joined Equilibrium in 2003.

RELATIONSHIP is understood as a living thing, that forms between two people. We also have relationship with ourselves. Sometimes the difficulties and challenges of life are hard to understand. Our usual strategies for coping become inadequate and drain our energy to the point that we feel isolated, anxious, confused or depressed. By attending to this inner relationship, we gain insight into the internal dynamics that determine our thoughts, moods and behaviours, the aim being to enhance our life and to live it more fully.
Clearly this will impact on our external relationships. I am experienced in helping couples understand more deeply the dynamics between them as they face the challenges and transitions we all do in keeping relationships alive. It may be that an end to a particular way of relating is indicated, or it may be the end of a relationship that is no longer serving the individuals within it. When we are truly alive, our experience is authentic, connected, embodied, and immediate. Our responses to life situations, both positive and negative, bring colour, life and passion to our lives.

Georgina Cameron

Georgina Cameron
I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, accredited with the British Psychological Society. My areas of interest include stress, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and relationship issues. I work part-time in the NHS as well as seeing private clients. I have been practicing at Equilibrium since 2003. My main therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
What is CBT?
CBT is a short-term, solution-focused psychotherapy that has been shown through research to be effective to treat a wide variety of problems. Simply, CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings and behaviour affect one another and, therefore, if we can identify and alter unhelpful thoughts and behaviours we will begin to feel better.
CBT suggests that the emotions we experience and how we behave are determined by the way we think and perceive situations. If our perception of a situation is negative, this will result in negative emotions and negative behaviours. Therefore, CBT argues that emotional disorders are likely to manifest from negative and unrealistic thinking and so, through challenging our negative thought process, it is possible to reduce emotional disturbance.
CBT emphasises the collaborative aspect of client/therapist relationship which means that all aspects of the therapy are made explicit and would involve me working together with you to plan strategies to deal with problems and achieve agreed therapeutic goals within a time-limited framework. Through the use of this approach, you would learn new skills to identify unrealistic thinking, modify beliefs, relate to others in different ways, and change behaviours. In between sessions, you would also be asked to practice new skills in order to gain independence and effectiveness in dealing with real-life problems both now and in the future.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is not about “positive thinking” it is about thinking realistically and logically in situations that are experienced as highly distressing. Much of the CBT treatment is based on the here and now, and it aims at helping you bring about desired changes in your life.
CBT is recognised as the most researched and validated form of psychotherapy. The Department of Health strongly supports and confirms the evidence validating the effectiveness of CBT as a time limited and cost effective therapy.
What is CBT useful for?
CBT is a way that a trained therapist can help people who have a wide range of psychological conditions, ranging from severe mental illness to mild feelings and thoughts that interfere with normal living. In particular, research has shown CBT to be effective in the treatment of:
. Anxiety (including social anxiety and panic disorders)
· Phobias
· Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
· Obsessive Compulsive Disorders
· Mood disorders such as Depression and Bipolar
